August–September 2010

Greetings from the CHS staff. We hope you are having a restful and enjoyable summer break! As the end of summer draws near and your thoughts turn again to a new school year, take note of the following important dates and information:

EMAIL and WEBSITE INFORMATION: Nearly all CHS communication is conducted via the internet. Please email office@chstacoma.org to update us if your email address changes. If you do not have email access, please notify the office at 759-9570.

Watch for a re-designed CHS website coming soon.

INTRODUCING REN WEB: We’re excited to announce our new school management system – RenWeb School Management Software. We’re in the process of setting up RenWeb’s Parents’ Web – a private and secure parents’ portal that will allow parents to see academic information specific to their children, while protecting their children’s information from others. Watch for more information.

PLEASE NOTE: School will end at 2:10 p.m. this year instead of 2:05 p.m.

NEW STUDENT/PARENT ORIENTATION AND POTLUCK: Monday, August 30th at 6:00 p.m. We warmly invite all new students and their parents to an evening of food, fellowship and orientation. This meeting will introduce our new students to the daily schedule, expectations and routines of CHS. There will be an opportunity to meet faculty members and ask questions and get to know other CHS families. Please bring a salad or hot-dish large enough to feed 15 people. RSVP no later than Monday, August 23rd and let us know what you are bringing. CHS will provide dessert, beverages, and eating utensils.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: Wednesday, September 1st – school hours are 7:30 - 2:10. We do not have a school supplies list. Students should come the first day with a pen and a notebook. Freshmen please bring one (1 ½ inch) 3-ring binder to hold your science text pages. Individual teachers will let students know what additional materials, if any, will be needed. The second half of the day we will travel to a park for lunch and activities. Students should bring a sack lunch to eat at the park. Students are to dress according to the school dress code for the day.

LUNCH INFORMATION: All students must provide their own sack lunch – microwaves are available for student use. Also, a small student store is open during lunch every day except Friday.

OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP: September 22nd, 23rd and 24th. We have reserved the environ-mental learning center at Deception Pass State Park. More information to come.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Monday, September 27th, 7 p.m.

PARENT/TEACHERCONFERENCES: Parent/Teacher conferences will be held through the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, October 5th.

Below please find dress code information to assist you with your school shopping.

DRESS CODE 2010 – 2011

Students are to dress in a Christ-honoring way with neat and modest clothing that reflects their roles as learners and does not distract others from learning. The following list of approved and prohibited attire is designed to provide clear guidelines for choosing school clothing and not to pass judgment on clothing worn outside of school:

Approved attire includes: Neat and clean - collared shirts, collared fleeces with sleeves, knitted sweaters, CHS issued sweatshirts, blouses with collars or buttoned fronts, skirts, dresses and neat pants. Shirts are to be buttoned. Sunday attire is encouraged on chapel day. If students choose to wear a coat or jacket, the shirt underneath must meet the dress code standards.

Prohibited attire includes: Tight clothing, short skirts (skirts and dresses should reach the top of the knee as a general guideline), shorts, skorts, clothing without sleeves, tee-shirts, short shirts that expose the midriff, sweat pants, sweatshirts which are not issued by CHS, warm-up pants, pajama-like clothing, and shabby clothing. Students are not permitted to wear hats or hoods.

P.E. Attire: Physical education is held at the Y.M.C.A. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and modest, appropriate clothing for exercise is to be worn there. No sleeveless shirts are permitted at P.E.

In order to better enforce our dress code, we will implement a simple test to be sure that shirts, blouse and sweaters are long enough; students will be required to raise both arms above their heads—if the midriff or back is exposed it is too short. Please do your school clothes shopping with the dress code standards in mind.

Students who fail to meet these standards will be admonished by the school staff and are expected to cheerfully submit. Students who wear clothing outside the dress guidelines may be fined, asked to put on a school-supplied article of clothing or sent home. The dress code applies from the arrival at school in the morning until the student departs the school grounds.
